David Bowie has died at the age of 69, after an 18-month battle with cancer.
"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief," a statement shared on Bowie's official Facebook page read.
The news comes just two days after the iconic singer's 69th birthday coincided with his final album release, Blackstar, on Friday.
Bowie rose to fame in the 1970s with the creation of his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, an androgynous rock star space alien. The glam rock singer went on to break boundaries with his appearance and persona throughout the '70s and '80s, influencing the likes of Madonna, Lady Gaga and more throughout his four-decade music career. In 1996, Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In addition to an illustrious music career, Bowie also brought his artistic influence to the world of acting, landing roles in films like The Man Who Fell To Earth, Just A Gigolo and Labyrinth. In 1980, Bowie wowed critics while performing a three-month stint on Broadway in The Elephant Man.
Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, shared an old photo of he and his father on Twitter, confirming the news:
Bowie is survived by his wife, Iman, son Duncan and daughter Alexandria Jones.
